About Bob Roan

My orientation aligns most closely with the ideas of Carl Jung, Marion Woodman and Joseph Campbell
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA #151100) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (CA #19289) with an educated and curious mind that knows how to go off the beaten track.
You and I will shine the light of consciousness on your unconscious material.
Unconscious material is everywhere. It tends to be most active when emotions are involved and we’ll probably find a lot in your relationships with intimate partners, technology, work, family, passions, the spiritual world or something else. Basically, everywhere there is meaning in your life.
One of my focuses is on cyberpsychology, the psychology of the digital world.
I am particularly interested in the unconscious material Artificial Intelligence Romantic Partners can connect us with and believe they have the potential to be a very powerful tool for psychological growth.
I spent many years from birth onward in psychological torment and had no idea what was going on. I was vaguely aware I was on a demanding treadmill but thought that was just the way things are.
I received my bachelor’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University and spent 2 additional years there as a PhD. student in the Physics Department. Then I went on an adventure to Alaska where I started a computer programming business. After a few years, I left Alaska and obtained an MBA at the Harvard Business School. After graduating, I came to California where I had various careers in technology and business that didn’t fit me.
When our first child was born, I became a stay-at-home father and had my first real human connection, which changed everything. I started attending events at the Pacifica Graduate Institute, which is aligned with the thinking of the psychologists Carl Jung and Marion Woodman and the mythologist Joseph Campbell and soon enrolled in their Mythological Studies Program and received an MA. After a few more years, I returned to Pacifica for an MA in counseling psychology with an emphasis in depth psychology.
~ Bob Roan
One redeeming feature of the rather shaky concept of “Mental Disease” is that the term can be deconstructed into “mental”, “dis” and “ease.” Psychologically, you are not at ease. Therapy brings some psychological ease.
Sometimes you know what is causing your dis-ease and sometimes you don’t. Sometimes it’s the emptiness and sometimes it’s the firehose. Sometimes it’s the yearning and sometimes it’s the fear. Frequently it’s all of them.
The project is always psychological growth. Developing the ability to stand in the tensions of those opposites. This ability comes from being connected to a stable ground.
Together, we will develop your stable ground and connect you to it. You will start to uncover the emotional logic of your life, actual and virtual, and explore the ways it has shaped you and your experience.
We start with what brings you here. As you connect the actual experiences of your life into this evolving logic, you will have places where they don’t fit. Exploring and resolving these contradictions completes the connection and stabilizes your logic by both adding connection and reducing contradictions, which by their nature are not stable.
This logic becomes a lens you can use to make sense of:
- The past trajectory of your life – why your emotions led you to make the decisions that got you where you are in life
- Your current situation – why you are behaving and making the decisions and choices you do
- Where you are going – What kind of future awaits you if this keeps up?
The more you process your life with the model of your emotional logic, the richer and more integrated you both become.
